GeoMAPEX Portal
Transforming Industrial Operations Through the Location of Things.
What is GeoMAPEX® Portal?
GeoMAPEX® Portal is a specialized geospatial application for visualizing industrial assets and critical operational data in a real-time geographic context.
GeoMAPEX® Portal is specifically engineered to address the needs of industrial organizations engaged in complex operational activities that require robust asset management and the integration of sensors, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. By bringing together Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) data, the platform enhances situational awareness and operational efficiency.
- Identify the location of assets
-
Simplify the analysis of distribution network processes
-
Prevent, predict, and analyze activities with a spatial component
-
Make smarter and more timely decisions
This comprehensive integration empowers industries such as energy, water management, oil and gas, mining, transportation, pharmaceuticals, and facilities management to make more informed strategic decisions. Through improved visibility into operational assets and processes, organizations can optimize performance and respond more effectively to changing conditions, resulting in greater reliability and efficiency across diverse industrial sectors.
GeoMAPEX® Portal works as a hybrid platform (on-premise and/or cloud) capable of collecting real-time data from the field (via sensors, SCADA/OPC, IoT, etc.) and linking it to its geographical location on interactive maps. This allows organizations to georeference their infrastructure and correlate operational behavior with location for instant actionable insights.
Main Features of GeoMAPEX® Portal
Asset georeferencing: Allows you to record and visualize on the map the exact location of key assets (equipment, facilities, pipelines, vehicles, etc.) along with their operational and technical attributes. Each map element is linked to real-time data (e.g., sensor readings, PLC statuses) for easy contextual control and analysis.
Real-time geospatial visualization: Offers interactive web maps showing instantly updated operational variables, thematic layers, and dynamic symbology. For example, layers of temperature, pressure, levels, or equipment conditions can be superimposed directly on the geography of the plant or region, simplifying the analysis of distribution networks and the identification of anomalous conditions in the territory. The interface allows you to zoom, pan and filter data to drill down into specific areas or assets.
Spatial-temporal analysis: Combines the temporal behavior of operational data with its geographical position. This enables geographical history functionalities (see how a variable evolved at a certain point on the map) and spatial correlation (compare areas). Analytical capabilities such as proximity analysis (e.g., which sensors are close to event X?), optimal routes (for maintenance crew dispatch), zones of influence or heat (heatmaps) of operating parameters, and zoning of risk areas or unexpected operating conditions are included. Such analyses help reveal patterns that would not be evident in traditional charts or graphs.
Geo-alerts and proximity notifications: GeoMAPEX® Portal can generate location-linked alarms. For example, if a sensor registers an anomaly, the system not only sends an alert but also highlights the location of the incident on the map. It also supports geofence-based notifications: field technicians can receive alerts on their mobile devices when entering or leaving an area of interest (e.g., hazardous area, out-of-range equipment). This improves response in the field, as personnel know where critical events occur and can act accurately.
Integrated operational dashboards: The solution offers web dashboards that combine operational indicators with geographic visualizations. On a single screen, a user can view KPI (performance indicators) trend charts next to the live trading map. GeoMAPEX® Portal integrates with dashboarding tools (such as AVEVA’s PI Vision, Microsoft’s Power BI) to embed interactive maps within traditional control screens. These geospatial dashboards provide a unified picture of the situation: for example, monitoring the production of an oil well along with its location and state of the surrounding environment (weather, security, etc.).
Advanced Applications (Digital Twin and more): By combining all of the above functionalities, GeoMAPEX® Portal enables advanced use cases as a geographic Digital Twin of operations. This means that the plant or network of assets can be virtually recreated on the map with all its live data, to simulate scenarios and predict behaviors. It can also be used as a centralized warning system (monitoring multiple sources of events) and for risk heat maps (identifying areas with high occurrence of failures or anomalous conditions). All these uses contribute to better planning and anticipation of events, benefiting the continuity and safety of the operation.
Architecture, Integration and Scalability
Hybrid and scalable architecture: GeoMAPEX® Portal is built on enterprise-grade GIS web technologies, with flexible deployment both on-premise and in the cloud. The architecture is scalable to handle massive streams of data in real time, and secure for deployment in industrial environments. At an operational site, the Portal connects to various data sources in the plant – e.g. SCADA OPC UA servers, data historians (AVEVA PI System_Historians), IIoT APIs, operational databases – continuously collecting data streams of sensors, alarms, events and KPIs.
This data is processed and sent to the cloud (or to a central server) where GeoMAPEX’s geospatial engine correlates it with location information. By supporting open standards (OGC, REST) and common industry protocols, the system achieves high interoperability with legacy systems without the need for extensive custom developments.
Integration with AVEVA PI System™: GeoMAPEX® Portal features native integration with the AVEVA PI System (formerly OSIsoft PI) real-time data platform to make the most of existing operational information in organizations. There is even a specialized edition, GeoMAPEX® Portal for PI System, which provides dedicated components: (a) an extension of the PI Asset Framework (PI AF) that incorporates geographical elements, allowing assets to be organized in the PI hierarchy along with their coordinates and spatial metadata; and (b) a plug-in for AVEVA PI Vision which enables the visualization of interactive geospatial maps within PI Vision dashboards. Thanks to this, all installations that already store their historical and real-time data in PI Server can be reflected on the map without duplicate modeling effort.
For example, if PI System manages the temperature of a piece of equipment and its status, GeoMAPEX® takes those values and displays them on the location of that equipment on the map, updating them dynamically. The integration is bidirectional: from the map you can launch queries to PI System (e.g. see historical trend of a sensor) and from PI Vision you can access the geographical context of an alarm. This eliminates silos between operations data and its spatial dimension, providing a complete view of what’s happening, where it’s happening, and when it’s happening.
AVEVA Connect compatibility: In line with digital transformation trends in the industry, GeoMAPEX® Portal supports AVEVA Connect, AVEVA’s unified cloud platform. This means that the solution can integrate with the AVEVA cloud for centralised and secure access, or interoperate with services in AVEVA Connect for data sharing.
GIS Platform and Esri ArcGIS Online: The core of GeoMAPEX® Portal is built on state-of-the-art Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology for the web. ATISoft Technologies, LLC, is an Esri technology partner, so the Portal leverages the capabilities of the ArcGIS Online platform. In fact, it is feasible to use all the functionality of ArcGIS Online for the use of basemaps, additional cartographic layers (topographic layers, satellite imagery, streets, etc.) and integration with corporate GIS content that the organization already handles. This provides high-quality maps and the ability to use advanced Esri services (e.g., geocoding, geographic analysis in the cloud, or sharing maps with external users) within the GeoMAPEX® Portal. By relying on OGC standards, you can also incorporate data from other GIS sources if necessary.
ArcGIS Online technology ensures that the portal can efficiently handle complex representations (thousands of geographic objects, zone polygons, paths, etc.) while maintaining good performance in the browser. In addition, dynamic symbology is managed with ArcGIS: for example, coloring pipes according to their pressure, or displaying animated icons on computers that change state. In summary, the adoption of ArcGIS ensures cartographic robustness, broad compatibility, and aligns GeoMAPEX® Portal with one of the most widely used GIS platforms worldwide, protecting future technology investment.
